25 Years Ago

October 18, 1995

Members of the Hewitt Revitalization Group took about half an hour on Tuesday, October 10 to give certificates of appreciation to the local businesses in Hewitt. Everyone met at the Wagon Wheel Cafe and gave Joanie and Larry Sworski, the owners, their certification. Certificates were also given to Harold Tritsch of the Hewitt Co-op Grocery, John McLaughlin of the Hewitt Garage, Arliss Lovelace of Country Corners, Marlene Ackerson of Tammy’s Bar and Grill, David and Nan Stillwell of Sunshine Elevator and Feed Inc., and Lori Ostrowski who has been providing daycare for 10 years. Al and Holly Knutson, members of the Hewitt Revitalization Group, made the presentations.


75 Years Ago

October 18, 1945

Returning with the famed 43 “Winged Victory” division from the Pacific War and occupation duty in Japan is Corporal Carl R. Wickenberg. Corporal Wickenberg was inducted into service in March 1942 and joined the division in March 1944. He saw action with the 43rd in New Guinea and Luzon and received the Bronze Star medal for meritorious service in Luzon. He wears the Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with two campaign stars, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon.

The Bears football team traveled to Henning last Friday and beat that team with a score of 51-2 for their fifth consecutive win in five games this season. Johnston is credited with three touchdowns. Harlow, Schwantz, Billy Bottemiller, Karl, and Wayne each had one.
