25 Years Ago

November 22, 1995

Fire prevention poster winners were: Kelsy Stach, grade two (Mrs. Miller); Maria Ervasti, grade four (Mr. Frethem); Avaran Blashack, grade three (Mr. Finck); Cody Spear, grade five, (Mrs. Tiegland); Amanda Kneisl, grade one (Mrs. Desotell); Joeb Oyster, grade six (Mrs. Reiwer); and Sterlene Zimmerman, kindergarten (Mrs. Louisiana). These students each received $5 for their first-place winning posters.

St. John’s University sophomore Jason Blashack, son of John and Audrey Blashack of Bertha, is a member of the 1995-96 History Club at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University. The club sponsors speakers on historical events and informational sessions on possible careers in related fields.


75 Years Ago

November 22, 1945

Basketball practice began last Friday with seven lettermen returning for the Bertha High School team. They are Roland Harlow, Vaughn Hoakanson, Donovan Johnson, Bob Schwantz, Wayne Sagehorn and Billy Johnston. The first game will be played at Deer Creek. The boys on the squad have proudly started wearing new T-shirts with fighting Bear emblems on the front with other students soon to follow. The boys predict an exciting and successful season.

The regular meeting of the Woman’s Club was held at the Congregation Church parlors with Mrs. M.B. Will, Mrs. J.N. Mullin, Miss Clare Bishop, Mrs. W.W. Will, Mrs. S.P. Alden and Mrs. A.R. Cornell as hostesses. The topic of the meeting was Russia and reports were given by Mrs. A.S. Herseth, Mrs. Wm. Payne and Mrs. Eunice Mittion, after which an open discussion was enjoyed.
