25 Years Ago

April 17, 1997

Ken Johnson, Leader, was shearing sheep at the Conrad and Kathy Tyrrell farm, rural Staples, on Saturday. Ken shears sheep for many area sheep farmers on an appointment basis. The Tyrrell’s have 45 sheep in their flock now, and approximately 50 spring lambs. The wool is packed, approximately 21 fleece to a 160 to 180-pound bag, and then sold to Mid-State Wool Growers in Hutchinson, Kansas. The Tyrrell family flock is mostly Columbia with some Suffolk mix.

Harvey Christensen received the Meritorious Service Medal and Sandra Christensen was honored for her support of Harvey’s 29-year military career. Brigadier General Gary E. LeBlank presented the awards at a retirement party held at the Hub Supper Club on April 5.


75 Years Ago

April 19, 1947

This week the Al Hynnek Garage, in connection with Al’s Service Station, is undergoing extensive improvements. To make auto greasing facilities possible, the roof of the garage has to be raised five feet and additional windows to make better light and ventilation. New doors will also be added to the front entrance.

Miss Joan Gaida, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Gaida of this village, will be presented in a piano recital by the Music Department of the College of St. Benedict Sunday Evening.
