News from Browerville's Past

July 27, 2000

The Kahlert family of Browerville has been in many different kinds of businesses for a long time. It started in 1932, when they decided to start the potato business. They bought the potatoes from farmers, graded, sorted, sacked then sold them. The potato business used to boom. In 1934, the Kahlerts started a chicken hatchery. They had about 100,000 eggs. The chicks were sold anywhere from one to ten days old. In 1940, they gave up the potato and chicken business and moved into coal. In 1951, they quit the coal business and moved into oil, as nobody wanted coal anymore. In 1968, they went into the fuel and tire business and moved to the main street building that is closing.

The balance of the fair will provide fun of a more sedate nature for the older people. The wide selection of vaudeville acts of the DeWaldo attractions will please all of the grandstand audience, as it has in years past. It will be fun to sit in the shade of the porch in the old settler cabin to rest and exchange a few pleasant memories with some other old settler and inspect relics of their day.
