On May 9, the District Special Olympics competition was once again held in Long Prairie with the cooperation of the Long Prairie/Grey Eagle School system offering the use of their track facilities. The Area 5 Special Olympics Track and Field event hosted about 275 athletes from: Browerville, Aitkin, Bertha-Hewitt, Brainerd, Crosby-Ironton, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle, Menahga, Mid-State Co-op, New York Mills, Remer, Onamia, Pillager, Pine River/Backus, Sebeka, Staples/Motley, Verndale, Wadena-Deer Creek, Walker-Hackensack-Akeley and a group from Alexandria.

Ramona Faye Field of Browerville won an award for a piece of work she submitted to New Voices, an anthology of writing published by Bemidji State University. Field, a sophomore at Browerville High School, won the third place Gwendolyn Brooks Award in the poetry category for “Paper Hearts”.
50 Years Ago

Contrary to the fact that a young lady had always been named as valedictorian of the graduating classes in former years, the honor this year falls upon Mr. Gerald Drayna, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Drayna of Hartford Township. Gerald attained an average of 97.2 for his conscientious study during his four years at the Browerville High School.

Dr. and Mrs. C.B. Anderson of Long Prairie will appear in person at the high school auditorium at Browerville on Sunday evening, May 20, at 8 p.m., with their colored movies which they took of their big game hunt in Africa recently. This program should prove interesting, educational and exciting to everyone attending. Come see the “Charge of The Rhino”. This evening’s entertainment is sponsored by the Browerville Community Sportsman’s Club. Admission will be 25¢ and 50¢. Everyone is cordially invited.
