Meyer Rescues Drowning Child in Clarissa Park

Thanks to a phone call from a local resident who heard about the incident, one of Independent News Herald’s own was recognized for rescuing a young boy who was drowning.

Amanda Meyer of Clarissa was at the Clarissa City Park on Saturday afternoon, May 30, for her sister-in-law’s baby shower. While gifts were being opened, Amanda stepped outside for a little break.

Outside, she noticed children swimming in Eagle Creek near a bridge, where the water changed from shallow to deep.

Two young boys were in the water, fully clothed, and one began to sink while the other tried to help him.

All Amanda could see were arms above the water as they started to disappear beneath the surface.

“The brother was trying to save him (the other boy), but then he couldn’t swim. They were both under the water, and then the one brother managed to get to the shallow part,” Amanda explained.

As the situation quickly unfolded, Amanda ran toward the water, removing items from her pockets and kicking off her shoes.

“I just jumped in. I was running there, taking stuff out of my pockets, and then I jumped in,” she said...
