Miller Wins Again, Lockwood Claims First Varsity Victory!
by Coach Kenny Miller
The Bertha-Hewitt Bears kept their momentum rolling Thursday, October 8, at the Ottertail Central Invite, bringing home two individual varsity championships and several strong performances at Balmoral Golf Course.
With 12 teams participating, including nine Park Region Conference teams, the meet offered the Bears a chance to test themselves against familiar competition on a challenging course. They answered with another exciting afternoon, highlighted by freshman Vance Lockwood’s first varsity victory and Kendra Miller’s third consecutive win.
Lockwood led the way in the boys varsity race, covering the 5,000-meter course in 16:49.4 to claim the first varsity championship of his young career. Fellow freshman Nolan Rach, who earned his own first varsity victory last week, followed with an impressive third-place finish in 17:18.3.
For the second straight meet, a Bertha-Hewitt freshman stood atop the boys varsity results. Lockwood and Rach continue to make their mark against varsity competition, giving the Bears a formidable one-two combination. Their success is especially impressive considering both runners are only ninth graders, with plenty of racing still ahead of them...
