A school paraprofessional and coach was recently found to be a predatory offender.

On Tuesday, September 9, at around 1:51 p.m., Chief Lane went to the Menahga School after receiving a complaint about a juvenile matter. He met with the involved students and school staff.

Menahga’s Assistant High School Principal John Hedstrom informed the officer that a paraprofessional, Jeffrey Luke Newburey, 24, had witnessed illegal activities happening in the boys’ bathroom. Newburey said he had been living in Menahga for about two months with his girlfriend and her three children.

Back at the office, the officer entered the names of those involved into the system and ran a driver’s license and warrant check as part of standard procedure. Newbury’s driving record showed his license was “revoked” and that he was listed as an “inactive” registered predatory offender.

The officer checked the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) website to confirm this information, which was accurate.

Newburey had moved to Florida in June 2022 and is required to register as a predatory offender in Minnesota until January 27, 2028...
