Patriotic Rock Part of the New Veterans Memorial

A new Veterans Memorial centerpiece, featuring a large painted rock, has been installed near Clarissa City Hall, nestled between a circle of flags. The rock and Veterans Memorial will be formally recognized at a ceremony to be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, during Summerfest.
The rock is being painted by local artist and former city clerk Sue Kent, who was given complete creative freedom for the design.
“We told her, whatever comes into your head, you put it on the rock,” said Butch Booker, Commander of Clarissa Legion Post 213.
The Legion chose the rock because they believe it looks better and is more unique than a flat board. The idea was inspired by other Legion posts, such as those in Henning and Sauk Centre, which also feature large, patriotically painted rocks.
The large rock was donated by local property owner Amos Yoder, who is a neighbor of Legion Treasurer Jim Line. When asked if they could take the rock, Yoder instructed them to take as many rocks as they wanted...
