The Verndale Pirates dominated on both sides of the ball Friday night, cruising to a 48-0 shutout victory over the Carlton-Wrenshall Raptors.
Verndale came out strong in the opening quarter, racking up 24 quick points. Joe Elfstrum broke free for a 25-yard touchdown run, then followed with a two-yard score and an eight-yard run, converting on all three two-point attempts to put the Pirates firmly in control.
The Pirates kept rolling in the second quarter. Austin Kveton recovered a fumble in the end zone, followed by another four-yard touchdown run from Elfstrum, giving Verndale a 40-0 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, Beau Strom electrified the crowd with a 70-yard scoring dash and connected with Liam Beastrom on the two-point pass to cap off the Pirates’ final touchdown of the night.
That score would hold the rest of the way, as the Pirates defense smothered Carlton-Wrenshall’s offense...
