Army Pvt. Melissa S. Anderson and Army National Guard Pvt. Robert V. Henrich have entered basic military training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, South Carolina. During the eight weeks of training the soldiers will study the Army mission and will receive instruction in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, first aid, Army history and traditional and special training in human relations. Anderson is the daughter of Cindy K. Johnson of rural Browerville and Robert W. Anderson of Carlos. She is a 1998 graduate of Bertha-Hewitt High School. Henrich is the son of Robert A. and Colleen K. Henrich of rural Browerville. He is a 1998 graduate of Eagle Valley High School.

Sherrie Lundgren, daughter of Richard and Kay Lundgren of Eagle Bend, is the recipient of a $4500 President’s Scholarship for the 1998-99 academic year at the College of Saint Benedict (CSB). Lundgren is a junior peace studies major at CSB. Heidi Anderson, daughter of Greg and Kristen Anderson of rural Hewitt, is the recipient of a $6000 President’s Scholarship for the 1998-99 academic year at CSB. Anderson is a first year pre-medicine major.

Three Eagle Bend young men have enlisted for two years in the U.S. Army according to M. Sgt. Stanley S. Fordyce of the Army Recruiting Station of Brainerd. They are: Sheldon C. Stevenson, Vern P. Thelen and Glen R. Gray.

Last Friday evening about 8:30 p.m., a car driven by Johnny Eckel and one driven by Gary Oftedahl were involved in a head-on collision on the corner two miles south of Eagle Bend. Both parties stated that because of the high corn near the road and the time of the evening that visibility was poor. They said the accident happened so quickly that no one really knew what happened.
