Corey Eckel of Eagle Bend did not plan to become a hero on July 20. He was just doing his job with his employer, Dan Hansen, near Verndale, when the unexpected happened. Dan, the owner of Hansen Excavating and Tire Service in Wadena, explained they had been tearing down some turkey barns near Verndale. It was really hot and they decided to cool off with a swim. The two men had been swimming about half an hour when Corey suggested they swim toward the railroad bridge. It suddenly got very deep and the undercurrent sucked Dan under. Eventually, Cory got Dan close enough to the shore so he could pull him into the shoreline where the water was shallow.

Jo Ellen Joa is a doula. A doula is a person who is experienced in childbirth and provides physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and after the birth. Jo Ellen emphasizes that a doula does not replace the doctors, midwives or significant others, but is merely there as additional support and works with relaxing the mothers.

August 5, 1976

The Eagle Bend Eagles dropped a 1-0 eleven inning game to Cold Spring last Friday in the finals of the West Sub-District Legion Baseball Tournament. They finished second.

The Memorial Fund Committee, organized in early June, is now in full swing to generate additional funds needed for the retirement wing which will be included as part of the Central Todd County Care Center to be located in Clarissa.
