“I’m just thanking God and my guardian angel that I am still here,” said Fern Hess of rural Eagle Bend to her group of fellow coffee drinkers on Wednesday morning, March 29.

On Friday, March 24, Fern had been going about her morning chores and had gone into the big shed on their farm to feed the horses in the lean-to that was attached to the shed.

She noted that the gate was hard to open, but dismissed it as she struggled to open it. Then she finished up the chores and was moving a sled from the shed.

“I heard the shed creaking and cracking, but it does that all the time,” said Fern.

About 60 seconds after leaving the shed, she heard the huge sound of the roof collapsing behind her. She was probably 50 feet from it when it went down. . .
