Tigers Turn the Tables on Thunder in Section 5A Playoff Win
Nine days can make a big difference. After suffering a 23-point loss to Long Prairie/Grey Eagle just over a week earlier, the Browerville/Eagle Valley Tigers flipped the script Monday night, defeating the Thunder 65–62 in a thrilling opening round Section 5A playoff game on their home court.
The Tigers came out with strong energy early, jumping to a quick 10–2 lead and setting the tone for the night. LPGE answered with a run of its own and eventually built a 29–18 advantage midway through the first half.
Browerville/Eagle Valley battled back and trimmed the deficit to just two points late in the half, but the Thunder scored four quick points before the break to take a 33–27 lead into halftime.
Both teams came up empty on their opening possessions of the second half before trading three-point baskets. The Tigers then began to find their rhythm offensively.
Aiden Hatchard knocked down a three-pointer before Brady Reed energized the crowd with a steal and layup. Reed followed that up with another three-pointer to tie the game at 38.
Christian Tobas then connected on his second shot from behind the arc to give the Tigers a 41–38 lead. Moments later, Jayden Schultz completed a traditional three-point play to push Browerville/Eagle Valley’s advantage to six.
The Thunder continued to battle, tying the game at 46 and briefly taking a 47–46 lead on a free throw. Ben Biegler quickly answered for the Tigers with an offensive rebound putback to give B/EV the lead back at 48–47.
Browerville/Eagle Valley handled the Thunder’s pressure defense well throughout the night and was able to stretch the lead to six points several times, though LPGE continued to chip away.
With two minutes remaining, the Tigers held a 63–60 lead. The Thunder cut the margin to one point with a minute to play. Although the Tigers missed a few opportunities at the free-throw line, Schultz stepped up and knocked down two clutch free throws to restore a three-point advantage. Browerville/Eagle Valley held on in the final seconds to secure the 65–62 playoff victory.
The Tigers shot an impressive 55 percent from the field compared to 39 percent for the Thunder. Browerville/Eagle Valley also caught fire from three-point range in the second half, making five of eight shots from beyond the arc...
