Tragic crash claims life of recent graduate

A recent graduate, Blake Unger, 18, is dead, and Izak Schermerhorn, also 18, is in custody at the Otter Tail County Jail following a crash in Bluffton Township.

According to a release from the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received a call regarding a crash near the intersection of 370th Street and 640th Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered a truck on its side in a ditch at the intersection. A body was found near the vehicle, later identified as Blake Unger, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, Izak Schermerhorn, was located and arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated (DWI). He is currently being held at the Otter Tail County Detention Facility facing charges of criminal vehicular homicide, fourth-degree DWI, and underage drinking and driving.

The incident is still under investigation.
