Police Department Dissolved
The Verndale City Council discussed the future of the Verndale Police Department. Sheriff Mike Carr Jr. explained if the city approved the change, to contract with the sheriff’s department for services, the proposal would move to the county board for final approval. The targeted date for the transition was January 1, giving both parties time to oversee contracts and conduct the necessary legal reviews.
Financial implications became a central focus. The projected annual cost for 30 hours of policing per week by the county sheriff was $101,400—a figure that, while offering savings compared to some prior estimates, still exceeded last year’s actual expenditures by about $30,000.
Members discussed why budget projections differed from previous years, noting complications such as staff injuries and differences between budgeted and actual hours worked. They also clarified impacts on revenue, explaining that the city would forgo certain administrative ticket incomes under the new arrangement, but that ticket revenue had never been intended as a primary purpose of policing...
