Wadena County Celebrates Landmark Forest Acquisition—3,355 Acres Transferred for Conservation

On Tuesday, July 29, Wadena County Commissioners and representatives from the Northern Waters Land Trust gathered in Meadow Township, north of Nimrod, to celebrate a recent acquisition. They met at a 120-acre parcel, one of several that Wadena County has acquired for forest conservation.
“This is truly a remarkable moment in not only Wadena County’s history, but also in the state of Minnesota,” said Annie Knight, executive director of the Northern Waters Land Trust (NWLT).
The Minnesota Heritage Forest Project has been a year-long effort to protect 8,200 acres of land across nine counties in northern Minnesota, spanning from the Brainerd area up to the Canadian border. The Northern Waters Land Trust, a local nonprofit organization based in Walker, serves the Upper Mississippi Headwaters area and focuses on local land protection. Their mission is to preserve land and protect water.
“We know that if we can protect the land surrounding our amazing lakes, rivers, and water bodies in Minnesota, we can influence what goes into the land and the water,” Knight explained...
