Arming kids with life-saving knowledge

A student was walking through the school hallway when their classmate suddenly started having a seizure. Later that day, their friend, who has diabetes, appeared pale and sweaty. During lunch, another student experienced a severe allergic reaction to peanuts. In the gym, a student collapsed from cardiac arrest. During dinner, a candle caught a curtain on fire.
These are very real situations that can arise at any time. Keri Weiher organized a mission to teach kids basic first aid, CPR, and how to use a fire extinguisher. Weiher was assisted by the Verndale Fire Department, Astera Health, and the Wadena County Sheriff’s Office to make the Kids First Aid training a reality.
Donations from the Maslowski Wellness and Research Center, the city of Verndale, the Verndale Family Life Church, the Verndale Lions, and Walmart made the training possible and free for the children. Additionally, lucky participants won bicycles, and everyone received a swim pass to the Mas.
Tom Krueger, EMS Education Coordinator with Astera Health, and Verndale Fire Chief Keith Weiher taught 22 kids what to do in various emergencies. The knowledge imparted is essential for helping them stay calm in frightening situations....
