Bears Battle Hard but Fall to Cromwell-Wright

The Bertha-Hewitt Bears dropped their first game of the season on Friday night, falling to defending section champion Cromwell-Wright 36-20. The loss moves the Bears to 5-1 on the year.

The game was competitive from the opening kickoff, with both teams trading scores early. At halftime, the Bears trailed 21-14 and were set to receive the ball to start the third quarter. Momentum swung back and forth throughout the night, but a handful of key plays ultimately determined the outcome.

Head Coach Jared Hoemberg pointed to discipline and execution as deciding factors. “There were just a few plays that changed the game,” Hoemberg said. “Penalties, a couple of busted assignments hurt us at the wrong times, and a few 4th down conversions we couldn’t make. Against a team as good as Cromwell, you can’t afford many mistakes.”

Cromwell-Wright, last year’s section champion, showed why they’ve been a consistent contender. “Hats off to them,” Hoemberg added. “They didn’t make many errors and played at an extremely high level for four quarters. They’ve been there before, and they know how to finish..."
