Bears Make History with Three Conference Champions

by Coach Kenny Miller
The Bertha-Hewitt Bears made their trip to Long Prairie one to remember on Tuesday, October 20, capturing three individual titles at the Park Region Conference cross country meet.
Seasonably warm temperatures and a challenging, hilly course tested the runners, but the Bears rose to the occasion with a historic performance.
For the first time in program history, Bertha-Hewitt claimed individual championships in three of the meet’s four races. Ambrose Heinze, Kendra Miller and Vance Lockwood each brought home a conference title, highlighting a day that also featured a runner-up finish and several strong top-10 performances.
Heinze set the tone in the junior high boys race, covering the 2,800 meter course in 11:03 to earn his first victory of the season. His breakthrough came at the perfect time, giving the Bears an exciting start to the conference meet. Teammate Jase Fitzlaff added an excellent performance of his own, finishing eighth in 12:21.6. It marked his second top-10 finish of the season...
