Campers evacuated as trailer house fire spread nearby

On June 16, at approximately 12:17 p.m., the Wadena County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a fire call to the area of County Road 7 at 240th Street, Oylen, Section 24 of Lyon’s Township. The fire was said to be a trailer house.

Upon the deputies' arrival to the scene, the Sebeka Fire Department was already on scene working to extinguish the fire. There appeared to be a single-wide trailer house on fire. Also on fire were various vehicles, miscellaneous household items, garbage, and a large section of grass putting out a black cloud of smoke.

Shortly thereafter, the Verndale Fire Department and MN DNR Forestry arrived on the scene for mutual aid along with Lakewood EMS, Staples providing standby.

Deputies on scene began taking photographs and meeting with fire department personnel. The deputies learned the cause of the fire could have possibly involved a metal barrel containing garbage that was smoldering upon the fire department’s arrival.

Children from the Oylen Alliance Church camp were evacuated. There were no injuries and the fire did not spread far enough north to harm the church. No one at the scene was injured and the fire was completely extinguished.
