• Frank Koplin and Maurice Lynch have Don Magnuson and his orchestra booked for the New Year’s Eve dance Saturday in their large dance hall, and on Thursday of next week they are giving a free grand opening dance for their new modern bar.
• J.B. Conley, Verndale, recently acquired a registered Holstein-Friesian cow from the herd of Geroge E. Marckel at Perham. Change of ownership for this animal, Marckel’s Madcap Bluebell, has been officially recorded by The Holstein Friesian Association of America. The Association issued 13,562 registry and transfer certificates to Minnesota breeders during 1948.
• The CROP (Christian Rural Overseas Program) collection for 1949, which was organized in Wadena County about a month ago by State Director J.A. Halvorsen, is proceeding very satisfactorily. Local Chairman Father Van Zutphen reports that the Verndale town canvassers have collected $140.85, which has been turned over to the county chairman. A word of thanks is due to the canvassers for their efforts and time they have spent for this noble purpose. The southwest solicitors brought in $56.25, southeast $41.75; northwest $26.25 and northeast $16.60.

• Santa (Dave Seaton) and his elves: Rhonda Bramer, Danielle Colby, Shari McClure, Paula Schill, Jennifer Ninneman, Kim Trosen, Lori Terveer and Meredith Olafson, who also served as usherettes for the Christmas Extravaganza, appeared back stage afterwards to greet children and adults alike. Those wishing colored snapshots of any of the Extravaganza scenes should contact The Sun.
• It was standing room only at the children’s annual Christmas program last week Tuesday. Elementary students were led in song by Mrs. Heins while the high school band was directed by Ted Masog in a number of selections, then accompanied by the audience, Masog directed them in a sing-a-long of Christmas carols.
• The Runaway Christmas Presents was the name of a Christmas program presented by second and third graders in Mrs. Carr’s room last week to parents and other classes. The Christmas presents (Tracy Uselman, Carla Arndt, Gretchen Rach, Jacob Colby, Michelle Friggin, Wayne Koons, Nichole Finck, Brett Lehner, Phillip Boys, Charity Anderson and Mike Orlando) became bored with just sitting under the tree, and decided to take off in search of something exciting to do.

• The Verndale Civic Center can be the answer for a place to hold a wedding reception, fundraiser or club meetings. Since 1985, within its walls a plethora of events have been held there thanks to the city that purchased it in April of that year. Not all small towns have the luxury and accessibility of such a nice building within its city limits. But this building, located on the east side, has become a vital place to hold large events.
• First Graders Caroline Wickman and Haley Anderson thought it was great fun to be able to shop for their family members in the school library this past Monday morning. The Holiday Store funded mainly from donations from the Verndale Lions and Lioness groups allows kindergarten through sixth grade students to buy presents that they may not otherwise be able to.
• Verndale High School Students Christian Seidschlaw and Kraig Kenyon volunteered to design the new graphics for the newest Verndale squad car as a way to “unite the school with the community,” both boys said. They have been working on the project since the spring during their study hall when they have extra time. Six months and 15 revisions later, they were able to come up with the design for the squad car.
