75 Years Ago, January 12, 1950
• One of our local egg buyers has brought to our attention that many farmers in the community are making a mistake by holding their eggs too long and losing money by doing so. He advises that eggs should be marketed at least twice a week even though they will keep in cold weather. If kept too long eggs form an air cell which reduces their grade and one can lose as much as 11 cents a dozen.
• The Redeemer Lutheran Church in Verndale will be the scene of the Verndale Commercial Club’s Community Dinner next Monday evening, January 16. The main purpose of this get together dinner of the Commercial Club members, their wives and other folks, is to bring to light the needs of a doctor’s office, a recreational building and other improvements for the betterment of the community.
• The Seventh Annual Conservation Essay Contest, sponsored by the Minnesota Federation of Women’s Clubs with the Department of Conservation cooperating, opened January 9 and continues until April 7, it was announced today by Mrs. S.J. Nicholas of Minneapolis, president of the federation. The title of this year’s contest is “International Wilderness Peace Memorial Forest.”
40 Years Ago, January 9, 1985
• Verndale’s newest business will be holding an open house on Saturday, January 12, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. You’re all invited to the Professional Image beauty salon at 205 South Brown Street to visit and register for free prizes and enjoy free coffee and cookies. The new owner is Kinnie Rousslang who recently completed the beauty operator’s course at Wadena AVTI.
• Booster members again gathered up spent Christmas trees Saturday morning which will be used to provide protection for wildlife. They were: Gary Bramer, Jim Runyan, Dick Tangeman, Betty and Eric Runyan, Chuck Tangeman, Barb Schwarz, Armond Swanson, Mark Callahan and Dennis Johnson are pictured in front of the hayracks used to transport the trees.
• There were several upsets like the New Year’s Day football games, as well as the Verndale Booster Basketball League returning to action on January 2 following a holiday vacation. Two 7:15 half-court games were played between the Rangers/Rockets and Seatons/Swans. The game between an improved Rangers team and the Rockets started out close until the Rockets outside shooting got hot.

• From coloring in a color book at a young age to become a full fledged artist, local Verndale resident Madeline Ramirez has come a long way. Currently her artwork is being exhibited at the Tri-County Hospital in Wadena. Ramirez was born and raised in Bayamon, Puerto Rico until the age of nine when she moved to the United States. In 2004, she moved to Verndale which is now her home.
• Pictured, Ashley Richter took a shot in the game against their Bulldogs opponent during the Eagle Valley holiday tournament. The Lady Pirates took third place with a 66-45 win over Swanville.
• Verndale area six-year-olds have received a beautifully bound gift book about positive character-building traits entitled “My Favorite book.” The book is full color and organized into multiple stories concerned with teaching positive citizenship values to youngsters.
