News from Verndale's Past


40 Years Ago, May 26, 1985

• The “Sound of Music” will be depicted in floral arrangements for the annual Country Garden Club Flower Show scheduled for this Saturday, June 8. There will be ten categories in the artistic division: “Tie a yellow ribbon ‘round the old oak tree”, “White sport coat, pink carnation”, “Green grass of home”, “Down by the old mill stream”, “My blue heaven”, “Over the rainbow”, “White Christmas”, “Red sails in the sunset”, “Apples, peaches, pumpkin pie”, and “It’s a small, small world.”

• Carl Lind was present Friday to present the first Lind Community Scholarship Awards. It was a matching funds project whereby the Lind family matched up to $1500 with the amount raised in the community to put toward a scholarship. He is shown in this picture presenting a $600 scholarship to Michelle Anderson and another to Jim Blaha. Three $400 scholarships from the $1200 raised locally went to Val Luebke, Dan Smith and Kevin Kneisl. It will be repeated each year as long as there is community support.

• Although not all the pledged money has been turned in yet, Chairman Barb Schwartz indicated that the earnings this year for the Cystic Fibrosis Bike-a-thon have far surpassed any year yet in which the Boosters have sponsored the event. She said it should total about $700, with 12 of the 18 riders earning t-shirts, Brandi Kvamme had the most pledges, and Elsie Verderbruggen came in second, which earned them backpacks.

• Dr. James R. Schuft, son of Mildred Schuft of Verndale, has received a clinical faculty appointment from the University of Minnesota. The appointment is in the department of Family Practice and Community Health. The Dean of the Medical School appointed Dr. Schuft as a Clinical Assistant Professor effective April 1, 1985.

15 Years Ago, June 10, 2010

• The Verndale High School held their graduation commencement service on Friday, June 4, at 8 p.m. at the Ted Masog Auditorium. Thirty-two students participated in the ceremony becoming graduates of the Class of 2010. Clay Cottrell and Darian Nadgewick delivered the senior addresses. As the graduates close the book on this chapter of their lives, may they open a new one and begin their journey through life. As their class motto states, may they “Find a purpose and live for it.” Cottrell received a standing ovation as he was awarded a full scholarship to the U. S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.

• What do you get when you mix a Pirate, a Cardinal, a Bulldog, a Hornet, a Tiger and three Rebels? A girls basketball team that is a lot of fun to coach and watch them play the game. Members of the 2010 X-Factor spring basketball team who are pictured: Elizabeth Johnston (Verndale), Sadie Ellenson (Henning), Taalyr Egness, Sierra Benning, Danielle Pratt (Eagle Valley), Lexi Loven (Swanville), Kimmy Mrozek (Upsala), and Kenley Johnson (Browerville).

• The Verndale Bison won a pair of exciting games in the Lake and Pine South over the weekend. On Friday night, the Bison defeated the second place Nisswa Lightning 4-1. Then on Sunday, the Bison shutout the first place, undefeated Nimrod Gnats 2-0.

• G&L Service is making some changes. The auto gasoline islands will be closed at G&L Service pending a real estate sale, but G&L will still deliver bulk fuel as well as provide service on your vehicle.
