25 Years Ago

July 15, 1998

Vandals in the city park have city officials frustrated. They think they know who is doing the damage, but they have not been able to catch the culprits. According to Jerry Sovich, the vandals have torn braces off the ceiling in the shelter, broke into the fuse boxes, smeared excrement on the walls of the restrooms, set fires in the restrooms and thrown a picnic table into the creek. Sovich said several times, “The restrooms are a real mess!”

Patsy Holmquist, an office staff member at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Clarissa, recently participated in the 1998 Western Minnesota Seminar for Church Secretaries and Office Support Staff. The seminar was held at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Alexandria on July 8. She was among 50 people who attended the one-day inter-denominational event co-hosted by the Local Planning Committee and Gustavus Adolphus College of St. Peter.


50 Years Ago

July 12, 1973

Policeman Jim Brandborg examined a marijuana weed that was brought into the Independent Office on Monday by Mrs. Francis Determan. Marijuana is easily available in Minnesota and in this area, as it grows wild but is not of high quality, as it usually grows in more tropical climates. Sometimes the sellers mix it with the higher quality stuff. The weed is actually pretty with long stalks and jagged leaves, resembling a flowering houseplant.

Dale Foote was elected chairman of the Clarissa Board of Education by a unanimous vote at the annual re-organizational meeting held last Monday evening, July 2, at the superintendent’s office at the school.
