Looking Back

People who know Edna Lovelace from Hewitt have probably enjoyed many of the talents she has. But they probably didn’t get the opportunity to enjoy her writing talent until around 1960. Edna lived in Hewitt for the past three years. Previously, she and her husband, who passed away four years ago, lived on a farm a few miles from Hewitt. This summer Edna spent a lot of time on the book of poetry “Down to Earth” which includes around 100 of her poems.

Mike Helle and Kevin Thiel are pictured with the deer hide collection box at All-Star Service on Highway 71 in Bertha. Hunters are invited to place their deer hides in the box. Money collected from the hides will be donated to the sixth-grade class at Bertha-Hewitt School to help cover the cost of their trip this winter to the Long Lake Conservation Center. The hide collection is sponsored by the Bertha Area Sportsmen Club.

Wayne Sagehorn of Bertha was one of the first chosen by Ted Peterson of the Minneapolis Tribune to be on the mythical All-State six-man football team. Peterson made a good choice in picking Sagehorn who is one of the most clever and versatile players ever developed in Bertha. Karl Bottemiller, another fine Bertha player, was given an honorable mention as a linesman. Bob Schwantz, whose power and skill helped win many a game, was honorable mention as a back. Undefeated, Bertha’s challenge to play any team in the state was never accepted by any other team.

Lt. Col. Orville H. Rehmann of Bertha is currently attending the second nine-month course at the Air Command and Staff School, Air University, Maxwell Field, Alabama. Col. Rehmann served 17 months overseas with the 11th Air Force in Alaska and the Aleutians.
