Bob Sieling is the new principal at the Bertha-Hewitt High School. Mr. Sieling grew up in a family of educators. He said, “My mom taught, my uncles taught, my brothers teach, my sisters teach, and their spouses teach.” In fact his wife, Deb, will be teaching at Bertha-Hewitt this fall and his brother is teaching for Eagle Valley. Mr. Sieling graduated from Concordia and began teaching business education at Bertha-Hewitt in 1973.

Todd County Deputy Sheriff Chuck Eldred and Vicki Larson investigated the damage to the Pepsi pop machine in front of the Corner Market last Friday morning. Some time during the night someone broke into the machine, but Larson empties the money box every night. The would-be thief damaged the outside door so they couldn’t get at the pop either. It appeared a heavy bar had been used to break into the machine. An attempt was also made to pry open the Coke machine but it was not damaged.

The Bertha Consolidated School will open Tuesday morning for the 1949-50 school year. For the first time in several years, agriculture will again be taught. Mr. Leslie Colby has been hired to teach agriculture. A new elementary teacher has been added so there will be no combination grades. Bertha High School is gradually increasing subject offerings as last year speech and shorthand II were added.

The practice of the Bertha Hardware and Furniture Company of entertaining all of their employees and their families at an annual picnic seems the kind of thing which should be copied by more business establishments. One day each summer the store is locked up early and the crew takes off for some suitable spot to feast and frolic together. It was learned that over 40 people attended the picnic on Tuesday evening to help eat the hot dogs and potato salad supplied in generous amounts by the store.
