“I’ve heard it called the dumbing of Minnesota,” said Bertha-Hewitt Superintendent Larry Werder. “It’s not about raisers,” said Bertha-Hewitt School Board member Mary Ward, “It’s about education.” She was referring to Governor Jesse Ventura’s proposed budget which would cause the district to lose about $190,000 for the 2001-2002 school year. Bertha-Hewitt does have a fund balance of close to a million dollars, but Werder said, “We can’t live on our savings.”

Mark Schwantz purchased the bulk fuel delivery portion of All Star in Bertha. He started on March 19. He will cover the same delivery area as before and still carry Amoco products. The new delivery service is called Mark’s Fuel Service. Pictured is All Star Owner Bruce Sellnow and Mark Schwantz.

A crowd of nearly 400 people was on hand Thursday night in the school auditorium to see the film “I Lived With the Deer,” sponsored by the Bertha-Hewitt Sportsmen’s Club. Prior to the film, three game wardens spoke, giving details on the pheasant feeding program by means of airplanes.

A release from the Marine Corps lists two recent enlistees. They are Marvin C. Ferrell, son of Mrs. M.M. Ferrell and Robert L. Haase, son of J.C. Haase.
