News from Bertha and Hewitt's Pasts

April 25, 2001

Vaughn Hackbarth hasn’t lived in Hewitt very long, only about three years, going on four. He has devoted much of those years to volunteer activities to help enhance the lives of the citizens of the city of Hewitt. Vaughn has been a trustee at his church, Trinity Lutheran of Hewitt, and now serves as an elder there. He is also president of the Hewitt Historical Society. He doesn’t like to talk much about the things he has done and would rather tell you about the activities of others in his community. Vaughn gives much praise and admiration to the work of Bob Aldrich who is the curator of the Hewitt Museum.

Jazz dancer Joe Istre spent last week with the Bertha-Hewitt students teaching movement and dance during physical education and music classes. The kids enjoyed his upbeat personality and unique approach to teaching. He also spoke to the ninth graders about his career. He talked about his past and about life in New York. At the end of the week the children, kindergarten through sixth grade, showed parents and community members what they had learned from Istre. This opportunity was made possible by a grant provided by the Five Wings Arts Council.

Construction of the new St. Paul’s Lutheran Church building is expected to begin this spring. It is estimated it will take about one year to complete the church. The church will be 106 feet long and 35 feet wide. Plans are for the sanctuary to seat 330 people. There will be a choir section in a balcony. The architect describes the building as one of Old English design with a contemporary front. Members of the building committee are: Adolph Herseth, chairman; A.J. Hilpert, Clinton Cook, Henry Harms, Edmunt Hartung, Arthur Potratz, Wm. Heuer, Reinherdt Haase, Fred Zigenhagen, George Quanbeck and Rev. A.J. Kretzchmar.
