News from Eagle Bend's Past

March 18, 1998

The movie “Titanic” has been nominated for 14 Oscars, topped the charts in attendance for 12 weeks, and brought in mega-millions at the box office. Strange as it may seem, the movie also has ties to Eagle Bend. Steven Quale, the son of Sharon Quale and grandson of Alfred and Eva Schroeder of Eagle Bend, was the director of the second unit of filmography for the movie. Steven spent two months working with a Russian crew that was doing underwater filming. They took regular styrofoam cups, wrote messages on them, and placed them in a mesh bag that was strapped to the underwater remote camera.

February was Fitness Fever month at Eagle Valley Elementary School in Clarissa. The children pictured voluntarily took part in the program as part of their physical education class. The main event is a four-week Fitness Fever Challenge that encourages kids and their families to be active and eat five fruits and vegetables every day. Children are participating in the program at school but it takes the school, family, and community working together to support a child’s level of activity and nutrition. The program was managed by Physical Education Teachers Jim Allen and Lynn Schul.
