Shooter charged with second degree murder
Ricardo Nathaniel Del Valle Martinez, 24, of Long Prairie has been charged in the shooting of two brothers that occurred in the Browerville area injuring one and killing the other.
According to court documents, on August 29 at approximately 9:18 p.m., the Todd County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from the girlfriend of Edward Abreu Grullon stating the he had been in a shooting incident in the Browerville area and that he was actively fleeing in a motor vehicle from the individuals that had shot at him.
Todd County Sheriff’s Sgt. John DeCock began to respond to Browerville on Highway 71 where he intercepted a speeding vehicle he suspected Grullon was driving.
The vehicle pulled over to the side of the road. The driver was Edward Abreu Grullon. Sgt. DeCock observed that Edward had been shot in the left arm and observed numerous bullet holes to the driver’s side of the vehicle and the driver’s side window was broken out. There was also a person in the passenger seat, later identified as Edwin Abreu Grullon, 19, of Sauk Centre who was deceased, and later determined by the medical examiner that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the chest.
Through further investigation, law enforcement authorities discovered that the shooting occurred at the intersection of County Road 38 and County Road 11 in Todd County.
Edward reported that Edwin had some issues with certain individuals. Edward stated that he drove his brother Edwin to an area where they were going to meet others unknown to Edward to clear up some issues regarding Edwin owing money.
Edward reported that Ricardo Nathaniel Del Valle Martinez was involved in giving them directions to the location. Once Edward and Edwin arrived at the stop sign of County Roads 38 and 11, they were shot at while they were in the vehicle. Edward was able to drive away and get out of the area. Edward indicated that there were several vehicles at the intersection and it seemed they were at the stop sign waiting for them.
Law enforcement located numerous bullet casings at the intersection where the shooting occurred.
In a Mirandized statement Del Valle Martinez admitted to investigators that Edwin had stolen controlled substances and that he received an order to kill Edwin. Del Valle Martinez stated that the arrangement for Edwin to meet at a certain location was a ruse. He said that he was on the phone with Edwin leading him to the location. He further indicated he was in the back seat of a vehicle on County Road 11 when the vehicle arrived at the intersection, the shooters began to shoot at the vehicle.
Del Valle Martinez is charged with two counts of second degree murder, one with intent, not premeditated-aid/abett and the other with intent-aid/abett/attempted.
Del Valle Martinez first court appearance via Zoom was on September 1, and was denied a public defender as he was not financially eligible. Bail was set for $1 million with conditions or $2 million without conditions. His next court appearance is September 14 at 11:15 a.m. with Judge Antoinette C. Wetzel.
The incident is being actively being investigated by the Todd County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the MN Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. The Todd County Attorney’s Office is being assisted by the MN Attorney General’s Office.
