Storm hits area with a vengeance


The barn and shed at the Andrew and Kim Sandy farm was destroyed during the storm. The Sandy barn was thought to be the last working dairy barn in Burleene Township. It was built in 1979.

A powerful storm quickly rolled through Central Minnesota hitting many areas including Todd and Wadena counties on Thursday evening, May 12.

Much of the state was in a tornado watch which resulted in several suspected tornadoes and straight-line winds throughout the area.

Verndale, Wadena, Bluffton, Sebeka, Nimrod, Menagha and Blue Grass were in a tornado warning from 7:50-8:30 p.m. with radar indicating tornado and hail.

A wind speed of 94 miles per hour was measured in Verndale.

Radar had indicated tornadoes in Clarissa and southwest of Long Prairie. . .
