A 50-year friendship across continents

Cory Flagg of Verndale is best friends with Hans Postler of Bundorf, Germany, which is 4,350 miles away, a 10-hour flight, and a seven-hour time difference. Despite the distance, they have been close friends for almost 50 years.

Their friendship began in 1976 when Flagg decided to take the train from Schweinfurt to Haßfurt, where he was stationed as a soldier.

“It was the first time I left Ledward Barracks. I couldn’t just sit around and do nothing, so I took the train. I didn’t even know how it worked exactly,” recalled Flagg.

Upon arriving in Haßfurt, he first visited the market square and then explored the town a bit before ending up in a discotheque. There, he met Hans Postler and his brother, along with a few other locals who were members of the local Condors motorcycle club. This would not be his only trip from the barracks to Haßfurt; over the following weeks, he kept returning.

“Every weekend when I could,” said Flagg.

“It wasn’t that easy to get him into the disco,” Postler said.

At the time, various clubs and discotheques had banned military personnel from entering because of frequent arguments and fights.

“Be quiet, don’t say a word,” was what Flagg was always told when he sneaked into the disco with a group of Germans....
