For those who knew him growing up on a dairy farm just east of Browerville, it probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise that Scott Lieser has always been a hard worker. What is impressive, though, is how far that work ethic has taken him—and how proudly he brings it back home.
This May, Lieser was officially named the head baseball coach at Saint John’s University, taking the helm from longtime coach Jerry Haugen, who retired after an incredible 48-year run.
Haugen left behind a legacy of 916 career wins and generations of grateful athletes. Now, the program will move forward under the leadership of a former Browerville Tiger who once dreamed big and never stopped pushing forward.
“Leading the Johnnie baseball program is a dream come true,” Lieser said. “It’s been such a privilege to coach alongside Jerry these past seven seasons. I’m humbled and thrilled to have the opportunity to shape the future of this program.”

A 2009 graduate of Browerville High School, Lieser was a three-sport athlete for the Tigers, competing in baseball, football, and basketball. He helped lead the baseball team to two state tournaments and was twice named team MVP. That same year, he earned a spot on the Minnesota Lions All-Star team.
Following graduation, Lieser attended St. Cloud State University, where he pitched for the Huskies from 2010 to 2013. His performance on the mound was record-breaking—he still holds the school record for career victories (32)—and he earned multiple regional and national honors, including All-America honorable mention in 2013....
