News from Clarissa's Past

July 9, 1997

A special meeting called by the Eagle Valley School Board to discuss and approve budgets turned into a lengthy discussion over the summer recreation programs. The problems seem to be mainly with the Clarissa program. Boys who have shown up for every practice are warming the bench while others, possibly above the Babe Ruth age limit, have been invited to play in games. Other concerns included possible unauthorized persons driving, coaches who rode in vans instead of being on the bus supervising students, still not being allowed to use the baseball diamond, four-day weeks, and nothing on rainy days.

Verndale got an early 1-0 lead in dramatic style, but Clarissa rallied with tallies in three later innings on Sunday to gain its 11th win in the Hi-10 east division. The final score was 9-1 and tightened the Flyersā€™ lead with first place at 11-4 ahead of Wadena, which stands at 8-6.

Thieves were busy sometime during the night before the Fourth when they stole about 40 or 50 huge watermelons from the semi-truck owned by Dick Schnettler.

One of the quietest and coldest Fourth of July weekend holidays was had in Clarissa this past week. With most residents going to their lake cabins or traveling, the village took on a deserted look.
