Wagner Wins Gold, Hits Career Milestone to Lead BHVPP Girls at Hutchinson Open
The Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie (BHVPP) Girls Wrestling team delivered a powerful performance at the recent Hutchinson Open, showcasing both veteran dominance and emerging talent. The day was highlighted by an incredible championship run by junior Elora Wagner, who not only brought home a First Place medal at 155 lbs but also secured a major career milestone.
Elora Wagner put on a perfect performance, going 3-0 on the day with three pins. Her remarkable run culminated in the 155 lbs championship match, where she defeated the 8th-ranked Malaya Moorhead from Princeton by fall. The day was extra special, as it marked Wagner’s 49th, 50th, and 51st career pins. Her determination and competitive fire kept her alive in that final match.
The team’s competitive depth was evident across multiple weight classes, with three other wrestlers earning podium finishes in strong brackets: Veya McManigle (118 lbs): A true showing of grit, McManigle earned 6th place despite having to injury default out of the tournament. Before the injury, she started the day 3-0 with three falls, including a “VERY IMPRESSIVE” moment where she secured a pin with only one arm after injuring her wrist.
Autumn Dobratz (155 lbs): The freshman secured 5th place with a strong 4-2 record, all wins coming by fall. Dobratz showed remarkable mental toughness by avenging her first-round loss in the 5th-place match, pinning her ANML opponent to close out her day. Chloe Black (142 lbs): Displaying the benefits of her off-season work, sophomore Chloe Black went 3-3 to earn 6th place in a challenging 17-person bracket, proving she is poised for a great season.
Eighth-graders Anika Bostic (100 lbs) and Kristin Grewe (112 lbs) both got their first taste of high school competition and secured their first career wins by fall, demonstrating impressive “fire and spunk” and a commitment to learning on the job.
The team also dominated the Exhibition brackets: Zoie Dunn (142 lbs) took the Exhibition 1st Place after a great day that showcased her new skills and summer training. Hannah Lowers (130 lbs) battled through a tough division, finishing 2nd Place in the Exhibition bracket.
Autumn Becker (118 lbs) also reached the podium with a 3rd Place finish in the Exhibition bracket.
Other key contributors included Ashia Schulke (142 lbs), who went 2-2 with two falls, Alayna Kveton (142 lbs), who is excited to grow this season, and freshman Zoey Robbins (155 lbs), who had fun on the mat and held an in-depth discussion with Coach Wagner about the effectiveness of headlocks. Annabelle Koehn (155 lbs), who went 1-3 on the day, showed grit and great hand control in her 4 matches and recorded a win by fall in her third match of the day.
The BHVPP Girls Wrestling team is clearly starting the season on a high note, combining inspiring individual achievements with positive, hard-working team spirit as they look ahead to their next challenge...
