Local Kids Learn Lifesaving Skills at First Aid Training

Area children gathered at the Verndale Fire Hall on Sunday, September 14, to learn first aid and fire extinguisher basics.

The children received hands-on training in a wide range of emergency situations during the Kids First Aid program, organized by Keri Weiher and supported by the Verndale Fire Department, Astera Health, and the Wadena County Sheriff’s Office.

Students learned from EMT Katlyn Dykhoff how to respond to seizures, including keeping the person safe, rolling them on their side, and monitoring their condition while waiting for help. They were also taught how to recognize and assist with diabetic emergencies, including identifying signs of low or high blood sugar and providing quick-acting treatments or contacting emergency services.

The training also covered allergic reactions, including severe anaphylaxis. Students learned how and when to use an EpiPen, the differences between adult and junior doses, and the importance of calling 911 immediately after administration.

Cardiac emergencies were a major focus, with participants practicing CPR for children and adults, proper hand placement, compression depth, and rate, as well as AED usage to restore heart rhythm in sudden cardiac arrest...
