Over 250 Acres Burned, No Lives or Properties Lost

The Hewitt Fire Department responded to a vehicle collision with a tree on Highway 210, near County Road 77, at 1:10 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23.

According to the State Patrol, a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado traveling westbound went off the road and struck a tree. The driver, Phillip Kukuczka, 82, of Waseca, sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and the vehicle was towed from the scene.

The accident ignited a fire that rapidly spread through the dry grass, fueled by winds of 15-20 mph.

Fire departments from Bertha, Eagle Bend, Verndale, Staples, and Wadena responded to the blaze, with further assistance from DNR air and Fish and Wildlife crews...
