Verndale Earns Unified Champion School Status through Special Olympics Program

The Verndale School Board held their regular meeting on Monday, February 2.
Special Olympics
During a recent meeting, Tracy Mastin (Special Education), Brian Hartwig (K-12 PE/Health), Annie Mathison-Valley (SPED Teacher), and Jennifer Anderson (High School Special Education) shared their involvement with the Special Olympics. They learned about the Unified Champion Schools program, and thanks to their efforts, the high school has now earned the title of a Unified Champion School. Instead of relying solely on Special Olympics funding, they’ve established a local club called “Special Ed Athletics.” This allows them to control and direct funds raised through activities specifically for their students’ needs.
The program focuses on three important areas: whole-school engagement, unified sports, and inclusive leadership.
Whole-School Engagement: The team has organized various events, like a cookout during homecoming float decorating. Utilizing club funds, they purchased a Blackstone grill and provided food. This event has been described as one of the most inclusive experiences in years, allowing students who often feel overlooked to find a sense of belonging.
