After opening the season against several talented teams, the Bertha-Hewitt Bears earned their first win of the year Friday night with a road victory at Laporte. The Bears are currently 1–4 on the season and will play two more games on Monday and Tuesday before Christmas break.
The Bears opened their season at home on December 4 with a Park Region Conference matchup against the Henning Hornets, a top-five-ranked team in the state. Henning’s pressure defense made it difficult for the Bears to find an offensive rhythm throughout the night. The Bears fell by a score of 86–26.
Isaac Radniecki led the Bears in scoring with 7 points, followed by Trenton Becker with 6, Jalen Hinzmann with 4, and Henry Lockwood with 3. Quintin Flynn, Rowan Hauer, and Garrett Becker each added 2 points. Jalen led the team in rebounding with 7, while Rowan, Quintin, and Henry each grabbed 4 rebounds.
“Opening up against a top team like Henning is tough because they make you work for everything on both ends of the floor,” said head coach Austin Selvey. “The good news is we have a lot of areas we can improve on, and the boys worked hard regardless of the outcome..."
