News from Verndale's Past

40 Years Ago, January 15, 1986

• Of the 36 private wells used within the city of Verndale, which were recently tested for nitrates in preparation for a grant application, 26 were listed as unfit for human consumption. The council and citizens attending a public meeting held on January 6 at the fire hall meeting room were informed of the test results.

• High school junior and senior girls are being contacted to participate in the 1986 Miss Verndale Pageant which has been scheduled for April 12. Contestant sign-up deadline is Friday, January 31. A training session for the girls will begin with an orientation on Sunday afternoon, February 2 with an informative Mother/Daughter Tea. Young gentlemen are also needed as escorts and dancers are also being contacted at this time.

• The Verndale boys basketball team overcame its second straight thirteen-point deficit on Friday night to win over Henning by a score of 51-48. The Pirates were led by Art Schluttner with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Roger Denny added 18 points with 10 straight from the free throw line.

• The Pirates traveled to New York Mills to play in their Christmas Tournament held December 27 and 28. The first night they played the Pine River Tigers and lost with a score of 69-31. High scorers for the Pirates were Jill Hosek with 12 points and Jennifer Ninneman with 9.

15 Years Ago, September 23, 2011

• Verndale City Clerk Dawn Nelson has provided the council with a 2010 statement of receipts and disbursements that is now available to the public. In the general fund alone last year, the city spent more than it took in by over $8,816. The council has already cut more than that from the 2011 budget, but it may not be enough as money budgeted for snow removal alone this winter is melting away much faster than the snow.

• The Pirates boys basketball team traveled to New York Mills on Thursday and lost 68-43. Transition defense, costly turnovers and a cold shooting night ultimately doomed the Pirates. Verndale held tough for most of the first half, but a 10-0 run late in the first half put the Eagles up 33-16 at the break. Dustin Motschenbacher scored 10 points, all in the second half.

• It was a long break for the Raiders, but the second half of the season started with the Raiders hosting the WDC Wolverines. The young Raiders were short on wrestlers due to injuries, illness and some academic problems and were only able to suit up eight wrestlers. That proved to be too much going up against a very strong WDC team that has seven seniors. The Raiders wrestled their heart out, but only managed to score 15 points. Senior Kasey Horn won a hard fought match against Zach Bernu and was named wrestler of the dual.

• County Attorney Kyra Ladd, Sheriff Mike Carr, County Recorder Soledad Henrickson and County Auditor/Treasurer Charleen West asked the board for a 7% raise in their annual salaries. The salaries for these offices were set in 2007 and a cost of living adjustment was given in 2008. Raises were not given in 2009 or 2010.
