News from Verndale's Past

40 Years Ago, January 29, 1986

• Bob Neuerburg, Rodney Bounds, Rich Brown and Jim Kupitz of Verndale Lumber and Building Supply are happy to announce their new affiliation with the Our Own Hardware Company. Their current supplier, Gambles, Inc., has joined forces with the Our Own Hardware Company, who is one of the largest wholesale suppliers of appliances, hardware, sporting goods, automotive and housewares products.

• When you come from a family of people where just about everyone is a church pastor or missionary, what else could you expect to do, but follow in their footsteps? At least that’s what the new pastor at the Verndale Christian and Missionary Alliance Church has done. Verndale is his first charge since completing studies at St. Paul Bible College, and he has yet to be ordained, which will take place later this summer. He is Greggrey Valentine,whose father is pastor at North Hills Alliance Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He also has a brother, an uncle, and a cousin who are all pastors or an assistant in alliance churches and an aunt who works as a missionary in Viet Nam and the Philippines.

• Officers recently elected to govern the transfer of the Aldrich school to a community center were Peggy Geray, secretary-treasurer; Tim Bilek, chairman; and Ernie Meinhardt, vice chairman. A number of activities have been held at the center including a holiday celebration when over 50 people attended to join in the festivities. Many returned home with door prizes. Children were awarded prizes in a poster contest about what Christmas meant to them. The group will be sponsoring many upcoming events including card parties every third Thursday. Dan Bafler, a senior foreign exchange student attending Staples High School, will be showing slides from his home country, Germany. Everyone is invited.

• The Bertha-Hewitt-Verndale Raiders are currently ranked second in district wrestling behind first-place Staples. The Clarissa Bucks are ranked third. The BHV Raiders defeated the Wadena Indians by a score of 39-22 at Bertha. Sean Kramer (Wadena) beat Jim Carlson 4-2; Clint Snyder (W) pinned Brad Line in 1:21, Jim Winkles (W) beat Tom Meyers 12-1, Bill Wagner (BHV) pinned Jon Snyder in 2:36.

15 Years Ago, January 27, 2011

• The Verndale School District was represented at the Minnesota School Boards Association Leadership Conference on January 13. Verndale was one of 14 schools to share an innovative idea that they are using to teach students. Sandie Cottrell, Matt Parker and Lisa Paulson showcased the exciting ways the school is using technology to engage students in their learning. Examples included the webcams, Skype and iPads. The district was fortunate to receive a grant from the Minnesota Department of Education to purchase the equipment.

• The 2011 Snow Daze queen candidates are: Shani Bain, Louise Nolte, Jessica Sibert and Elizabeth Yungbauer. King candidates are: Ryan Mills, Nate Bart, Michael Hejhal and Kody Graba. Snow Daze festivities kick off on Monday, February 7, at 7 p.m. with the coronation and the crowning of the new king and queen and will end with a dance on Saturday evening.

• The Pirates boys basketball team suffered a 54-43 setback at Parkers Prairie last Tuesday. It was a seesaw battle for most of the game until the Panthers pulled away late with some key buckets and timely free-throws. Dallas Ehrmantraut led all scorers with 17 points, connecting on two from deep range. Zack Meidinger chipped in with 15 and Dustin Motschenbacher was able to add 5, playing most of the night on a bad ankle.

• The Raiders started off the week on Tuesday traveling to New York Mills for a duel against the Eagles. Just when the Raiders thought that they would fill all the weights, they just couldn’t do it, but soon will. It was a tough start with Justin Gordan losing by just one point, but wrestling well. Kasey Horn put the Raiders on the scoreboard with a 4-2 victory followed by a come from behind 8-7 victory by Hayden Truax and a tough 6-4 victory by John Weekley that brought the team score to 15-9.
