• The introduction of “The Minnesota Plan: Design a New Education System” is bringing teacher organizations, administrators, school boards and others together in a common bond. Six educational organizations have united to form a coalition called the Six-M to oppose this Minnesota Plan. The plan calls for the restructuring of our schools to eliminate the last two years of high school. All students, it said, should be expected to master a core program in communication, social studies, science and mathematics while no provisions are made for those students in special education classes, etc.

• The Verndale Independent School District No. 818 is applying for access to funds that would be used to provide additional interventions for at-risk students. The Alternative Deliver of Specialized Instruction Services funds would help the district purchase these services by hiring two individuals to perform interventions for at-risk students in grades 4-8 who are deemed to be on the verge of needing special education services.
• A newly formed cooperative baseball team—named Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale—is not likely to be the only thing Verndale and Bertha-Hewitt schools will be sharing in the near future. They are referred to as “Shared Services” and may, in the not-so-distant future, include sharing technology services, such as high-definition TV, business services, Spanish teaching services, counseling and others.
• Colin Turchin, a junior wrestling at the 285 lb. bracket for the Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale Raiders, will be heading to the state individual wrestling tournament. He will wrestle on Friday, March 4 and hopefully on Saturday as well. This will be the third consecutive year that Turchin has participated in the state tourney.
