News from Verndale's Past
40 Years Ago, April 16, 1986
• Kim Trosen, daughter of Dave and Rita Trosen, was named Miss Verndale in the 1986 pageant held last Saturday evening. Pauline Colby was first runner-up and Jennifer Ninneman, second runner-up and also Miss Congeniality. Pauline is the daughter of Dan and Beth Colby and Jennifer is the daughter of Sylvia Ninneman. Held in conjunction with the Miss Verndale pageant was the competition for Little Miss Petite. Lori Johnson, daughter of Dennis and Kathy Johnson, was crowned Little Miss Petite.
• The 92-head herd of milk cows belonging to Dale Lovelace of Route 1, Verndale, was one of the first in this area to be branded after their bid for the dairy buy-out was accepted. They were marked with a three-inch “X” on the cheek as required by lay, with two-inch similar marks identify the young calves. The irons were heated with a bottle gas burner. Norman Adams, and Pat and Ted Butler of Verndale are doing much of the branding in this area.
• Next Tuesday, April 22, at the close of office hours, is the last time to file for the two vacancies on the school board which will open up on June 30 when the terms of Jerry Nanik and David Bessler expire. Vessler will be completing his second three-year term and Nanik his first. To date there have been no filings.
• Verndale’s Clarinet Choir earned a star rating at the District 24 contest held recently at Pillager. Participants were: Sarah Schanz, Shari McClure, Melissa Richter, Aura Lee Unger, Monica Dolezal, Susan Kopischke, Genie Tarrell, Tammy Hahn, Jennifer Ninneman, and Barb Leonard. Aura Lee also starred with her bassoon solo.

• Jerry Kern’s talent as the world’s fastest human can opener was recently discovered by a talent coordinator who also happened to be originally from Minnesota and works for the Tonight Show. The agent found Kern through his YouTube videos. Kern was flown out to perform the trick on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He took friends Pete Bushey and JJ Korfe with him.
• Cory Carr is Verndale’s new police chief. Carr, Verndale Police Department’s only full-time officer and interim chief for about nine months now, was unanimously hired by the Verndale City Council . It includes a pay rate of $16 per hour.
• The first ceremonial shovel of dirt for the new Wadena-Deer Creek middle/high school building will be turned over on Friday, May 6, at 3 p.m. The WDC school board plans to invite local and state government representatives to the ceremony, who will recognize the efforts of the community and school committees who helped make the project possible.
• Congratulations to the Verndale wrestlers who placed at the NYWA State Wrestling Tournament. Other champions: Dillon Card took second place, Anthony Kern took fourth and Craig Orlando took fifth place. Kern and Orlando will be competing at Nationals in Chicago this weekend.
