75 Years Ago, February 8, 1945
• Pvt. First Class Edwin Warner had been awarded the Bronze Star posthumously for heroic achievement in action on the Fifth Army Front in Italy during an attack by his company upon a bitterly defended enemy position, related the award citation. Leaving his position of comparative safety, he moved out to the fire swept area several times to remove ammunition from the bodies of the dead and wounded and distributed it among his comrades.
• Superintendent C. R. Peterson wishes us to announce that arrangements have been made for school children to aid in the pick up of waste paper. He asks that everyone save their waste paper, tie it up in bundles, tying magazines, newspapers, corrugated paper in separate bundles. When a sizable amount is gathered, to warrant a pick up call the school and someone will be instructed to come for it.
• A total of $41.65 was raised in Verndale the past two weeks for the march of Dimes Infantile Paralysis Fund. $5.09 was realized from the boxes placed in business places for a week; $8.66 from the school children; $3.09 from tags sold; $2 in contributions, and $22 from the collections taken at the Verndale Theater.
40 Years Ago, February 14, 1980
• Pending approval of the site and water test, Verndale may finally have a new well and in sufficient quantities to satisfy its need for many years according to Councilman Bob Reul, test pumping at the site south and east of Verndale Custom Homes looks very promising. Johnson and Son well drillers of Sebeka pumped all afternoon at 250 gallons or better a minute and reported eight feet of water still in reserve at a depths of 38 feet when pumping ceased.
• Newly crowned Snow Daze royalty begin their promenade through the auditorium at the celebration held last Thursday evening. They are Kent Horsager and Cathy Runyan, carrying heart-shaped pillows awarded to each participant by the sponsoring Future Homemakers Club.
• February 17 marks the 59th anniversary of the founding in Minnesota of the nation’s first school safety patrol program and Governor Albert Quie has proclaimed the week School Safety Patrol Week. Sixteen fifth and sixth graders have volunteered their services guarding school crossings before and after school. They are: Leslie Compton, Jennifer Ninneman, Kim Anderson, Jeff Harne, Captain Dan Dahlvang, Kimberly Trosen, Paul Harne, Co-Captain Lynn Hahn, Jerome Anderson, Sarah Schanz, Wade Kern, Roger Denny, Larry Tholkes, Carol Masog, Shari McClure and Randy Denny.

• Jackie Wiese and Tom Adamietz are the 2005 Pirates Sweetheart Days King and Queen.
• Dallas Ehrmantraut was a second place winner in the Wadena Elk’s Central District Hoop Shoot contest held on January 22. Dallas scored 19 out of 25 throws. He was in the boys ages 8-9 category.
• The Park Region Conference Tournament found the Raiders earning team points in 11 of the 13 weight classes they wrestled in and took second place behind the New York Mills Eagles. The Eagles scored 250 points followed by BHV 164 1/2, Ottertail Central 139, Osakis 127 1/2, Menahga/Sebeka 110, Browerville/Eagle Valley 107 and Pequot lakes/Pine River/Backus with 105. The Raiders had five wrestlers advance to the finals and ended up with one champion, Matt Moenkedick, and four second place finishers, Ethan Kern, Jasper Oyster, Sam Moenkedick and Kevin Voeltz.
