25 Years Ago

October 4, 1995

Adam Riedel of Clarissa is a member of the University of Minnesota Crookston 1995 football squad. Under the leadership of Head Coach Scott Oliver, the 186-pound athlete plays the position of free safety. Adam was named specialty team Football Player of the Week for the September 9 game against Jamestown College and defensive back Football Player of the Week for the September 16 game versus Dickinson State University.

Pictured is Melvina Chapman who taught school in District #122, McKinley School, from 1921-1922. The school was located southwest of Eagle Bend in Eagle Valley Township. Melvina is now a resident of the Central Todd County Care Center. Lon (Violet) Tonsager was her third-grade student and lives in Long Prairie. The inset picture is of Melvina which was taken from the souvenir school booklet from the 1921-1922 school year.


50 Years Ago

October 1, 1970

The butter manufacturing plant of the Clarissa Cooperative Creamery Association was voted on by stockholders last Monday evening to be sold to Land O’ Lakes Creameries. The sale provides protection of the equities of the farmer patrons.

Six huge ears of corn, several of which were over 12 inches long were brought into the Independent office last Wednesday morning by Clarence Blommel.
