To the Editor:
October marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM)—a time to shine a light on a crisis that too often remains hidden in the shadows of our homes and communities.
Domestic violence affects people of every age, race, gender, and socioeconomic background. It is not confined to bruises or broken bones—it includes emotional manipulation, financial control, and psychological trauma that can last a lifetime.
The theme for DVAM 2025 is “With Survivors, Always.” This theme emphasizes the importance of partnership with survivors, focusing on safety, support, and solidarity. It encourages advocates and community members to show up for survivors and recognize the ongoing threats they face, including physical, emotional, and financial safety. It’s a call to action for all of us to stand beside survivors—not just during October, but every day.
In Minnesota alone, thousands of individuals—mostly women and children—seek help each year to escape abusive environments. Yet many more suffer in silence, afraid to speak out, unsure where to turn or unaware that help exists.
This month, I urge our community to take a stand. Learn the signs of abuse. Support local shelters and advocacy organizations. Talk to your children about healthy relationships. And most importantly, believe survivors when they speak.
Domestic violence thrives in silence. But together, we can break that silence. We can build a culture of compassion, accountability, and safety.
Let this October be more than a month of awareness—let it be a turning point.
