To the Editor:
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and this year’s theme, “25 Years Stronger: Looking Back, Moving Forward,” marks a milestone in the movement to end sexual violence.
For 25 years, survivors, advocates, and communities have worked tirelessly to break the silence, challenge harmful norms, and create safer spaces for all. While we have come far, our work is far from over.
Looking back, we honor the courage of survivors who have shared their stories, the dedication of advocates who have fought for stronger protection, and the educators who have taught the values of consent, respect, and healthy relationships. These efforts have changed laws, improved services, and shifted public attitudes.
Moving forward, we must continue to expand prevention efforts, engage new voices, and ensure that every survivor has access to compassionate, trauma-informed support. Sexual violence impacts people of every age, gender, and background, and ending it requires all of us–listening, believing, and taking action in our daily lives.
This April, let’s reflect on how far we’ve come and recommit to building a future where safety, dignity, and respect are the norm. Together, we can build a world free from sexual violence.
