News from Bertha's Past

25 Years Ago April 26, 1995 Douglas Quance, a second grader at Bertha-Hewitt School, collected the most money for the school’s Jump Rope for Heart activity, bringing in $102. The first and second grade combined earned $1100. Coloring contest division winners: Madison Aeling, 6, and Stephanie Boehland, 8, presented their pictures to Corner Market Grocery Store Owner Vicki Larson. Larson’s store sponsored the Easter scene coloring contest recently. LeRoy Yoder, 11, was the winner. ********** The Bertha-Hewitt High School Drama Department, under the direction of Tim Hjelmeland, will present “The Quilters,” a folk musical, on May 5 and 6. Kelly Greene, an Eagle Valley junior and pianist, will accompany the play. Kelly Messer, a Bertha-Hewitt alumni, has a leading role.

75 Years Ago April 26, 1945 Mrs. Don Bergeson received word from the War Department of the death of her husband, Pvt. Don Bergeson. He entered service on June 27, 1944 and last November was shipped to Hawaii. He was killed in action on March 10 at Iwa Jima. ********** Armand Sagehorn, who was remembered missing in action last December, is now a prisoner of war in Germany. Mrs. Sagehorn recently received a letter from her husband in which he described his capture by the Germans.
