With the All-School Reunion and Bertha Dairyland Days, what better way to say “thank you” to a person than to chose him as the parade’s Grand Marshal and also install him as the second inductee in Bertha’s Hall of Fame? Chosen for the honor was Glenn Johnson. The Hall of Fame honor was bestowed upon him by former Bertha educator Al Siegle and Principal Paul Maltrud.

The yard at Ray Brasel’s rural Bertha farm was filled with pickup trucks, and fathers and their sons, last Monday, July 3. Ringnecks Forevermore members were awaiting the arrival of Gary Westergren and a sport utility van, bringing 4200 Manchurian Cross pheasant chicks.

Bertha business places are offering shoppers in this community an opportunity to share in $30 worth of prizes, in cash and merchandise, to be given away at drawings each Saturday evening for seven weeks, starting July 22. Prizes will be awarded at each drawing: first prize is $15 cash, second prize is $8 in merchandise and third prize is $5 in merchandise certificates. The drawings will take place between the Olson and Quanbeck store and the Herald office at 9:20 each Saturday evening. To be eligible it is necessary to register at the Golden Rule, Sunshine Grocery, Potratz Market, Olson and Quanbeck or Bertha Hardware and Furniture Co.

Bertha’s population is exactly the same as it was 10 years ago, census figures show. Bertha has a population of 578, the same as in 1940. Hewitt village increased from 294 in 1940 to 312 in the 1950 tabulation.
